Manufacture of the Scanmar 40 began in 1988
and continued until the beginning of the 1990s when Yachts of
Scandinavia went bankrupt. The
manufacturing and marketing was originally through the Börjesson
Brothers who also manufactured the Omega and Örnvik boats.
During the late 1980s, Yachts
of Scandinavia was formed; they produced and marketed the Maxi,
Omega, Scanmar and Örnvik boats.
Construction
The
hull is of hand-laid fiberglass, while the deck is sandwich
laminate (cored). The hull is strengthened with
substantial longitudinal and latitudinal crossmembers. There is
a skeg-hung rudder, Whitlock rack-and-pinion wheel steering, and a
reverse transom.
The hull of the Scanmar 40 is very much like those of her
sister Scanmars, and was built with the same characteristic red
stripe; on later boats, the stripe became blue.
The Scanmar 40 was built with both a deep fin and a shallow
("Hydrokeel") keel . The info on
displacement and weight of keels varies in different brochures.
The heavier weights are taken from the most recent brochures.
Interior
As one would expect in the flagship of the Scanmar fleet,
the salon
is spacious and comfortable. Immediately to the port of the companionway
stairs is an L-shaped galley
with a gimballed LPG stove and oven, large icebox
and sink. There are many enclosed cabinets and drawers.
To starboard of the stairs is the forward-facing nav
station with a dedicated seat; behind the nav
station is the entrance to the separate aft cabin
which features a large double bed on the
centerline, a curved settee to starboard, and a private head
with toilet and sink. Reminiscent
of the Scanmar 33, the aft cabin has two fixed ports set into
the hull. The salon
consists of a long L-shaped settee to port, and a straight
settee to starboard. The space is amply supplied with natural
light thanks to two long fixed portlights and six smaller
opening ports. Forward
of the salon to port is another head with a shower, toilet, sink
and several lockers. The forward cabin contains two berths in a
V configuration and is ventilated by a large opening hatch.
